Department Honors and Achievements

Educational and research activities in the field of polymer science and engineering in Iran first begun in the form of an educational group in the department of Chemical Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) from 1978 to 1980. At this time, AUT was the only educational center that succeeded in obtaining an undergraduate student admission permit under the title of Chemical Engineering - Polymer subdiscipline. After a few years, this license became a bachelor's degree program in polymer engineering and the field of polymer engineering began its independent activities at AUT.

To expand the scope of educational and research activities in this field, the department of Polymer Engineering was established at Amirkabir University of Technology in 1975 as the first educational center in this field and later separated from the department of Chemical Engineering. The major of Paint Industries also separated from the department of Textile Engineering and joined the department of Polymer Engineering. Subsequently, the permits for master's and Ph.D. degree in this major were obtained, and the department started admitting students in all three higher education levels through the national university entrance examination. The department of Polymer Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology with 28 faculty members is currently the largest and leading department working in the various fields of polymer, including polymer industries, paint industries, polymerization, biomaterial polymer, and nanopolymer.

In 1985, to expand the scope of research in various fields of polymer science, this department proceeded to obtain a license to establish a polymer research center under its management. Eventually, with the growth of this center, it was separated from Amirkabir University of Technology and became an independent research center and is currently operating under the name of Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute. The Iranian Polymer society was first registered in 1997 by the faculty members of this department and other educational and research centers of Iran in the field of polymer science and now has more than 3100 members.

Since its establishment, the department of Polymer Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology has been a pioneer in holding national and international scientific conventions and conferences, and for the first time, in 1986 the International Seminar on Polymer Science and Technology (ISPST) was held in Iran by the faculty of Amirkabir University of Technology's Department of Polymer Engineering. This major scientific congress is held every two years with the cooperation of this department in other educational and research centers of Iran working in the field of polymer science. Since its establishment, Amirkabir University of Technology's Department of Polymer Engineering has been a member of the organizing committee of the International Conference of Polymer Processing Society (PPS), which each year is held in a different country, and every year, a large number of articles in this conference belong to the students and professors of this faculty.

Mahshahr Campus of Polymer Engineering was established in cooperation with Amirkabir University's department of Polymer Engineering, and the professors of this faculty were put in charge of teaching in this campus and setting up its laboratories.

The professors of this department founded the field of Polymer Engineering at the Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch. With the recruitment of Ph.D. graduates of AUT, the field of polymer engineering at Azad University is now admitting students in bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. levels.
